10 mixing EQ tips for music producers

  1. Applying EQ effects to instruments or drums during whole tracks instead of solo.
  2. Removing louder and unwanted frequencies can make your mixes better. Don't let your ears fool you.
  3. Don't apply an EQ boost to everything.
  4. Always make space for low-end frequencies, as this is the most problematic area
  5. Don't apply EQ to your effects blindly. Only apply EQ when needed and required. Sometimes, adding no EQ can provide a better mix outcome.
  6. When using reverb, always make sure to cut the reverb low, as this adds low-end rumble and makes your mixes muddy and distorts teh low end.
  7. A small dip in the low end can apply the mid or highs
  8. To achieve a better vocal mix, you might want to add a little boost to teh frequency where the sound resides, making sure everything has its place within your mix.
  9. A good rule of thumb for good mixing EQ is to cut narrow and boost wide.
  10. Only use minor EQ during mastering.

10 common mixing tips

  1. Add EQ to low cut 40Hz to 80Hz (hertz)
  2. There's loads of room for mixing as a freelancer
  3. Use reference songs and try to mix towards your references. You can use a reference plugin
  4. EQ your reverb, as it takes up too much headroom.
  5. Balance in mono, as loud sounds sound louder than they are.
  6. Don't mix your songs on the same day you complete your tracks; try and mix them the next day.
  7. Consolidate layered instruments.
  8. Try hiring mixing engineers to mix your songs and then compare your mixes.
  9. Studio headphones and a studio-grade system are an advantage when it comes to mixing and mastering your tracks.
  10. Always mix your track as a whole, not just one sound.
